Downy Woodpecker

The Downy Woodpecker is the most common of all North American Woodpeckers and this little fellow can be found in almost every state and province throughout the year.  He inhabits both rural and urban areas.

He is only about 6-7 inches high and spends most of his time foraging for bugs.  His tapping can be heard readily but he is a nervous character and rarely stays long enough in one spot for me to get a decent shot.  The closest I was able to get to him was about 30 feet away.

These shots were taken from my driveway and the edge of my deck over a 2 hour period this morning.
